Something The Boring Company is calling 'Loop' is being proposed to various government agencies in the Maryland and Washington D.C. areas. This would bring a twin tunnel system between D.C. and Baltimore which would be a main route for a potentially expanded future network.

Which agencies are involved exactly? Apparently a lot of them are involved in this type of thing according to TBC:

  • Federal Highway Administration
  • Federal Railroad Administration
  • National Park Service
  • US Army Corps of Engineers
  • National Capital Planning Commission
  • US Environmental Protection Agency
  • DC Department of Transportation
  • Baltimore City
  • Maryland Department of Transportation
  • Others - many federal/state/local agencies and bodies
According to their FAQ, Loop differs from Hyperloop in that it uses electric skates to propel its passengers at a rate of 125-150 miles per hour instead of the electric pods of a Hyperloop traveling at 600+ mph. Both methods of transportation will transport 8-16 passengers or a single vehicle, the defining difference seems to come down to a vacuum being applied to the tunnel or not.

While the Loop does not draw a vacuum, it's tunnels are apparently compatible with Hyperloop requirements, meaning a future expansion could mean an upgrade one day to full blown Hyperloop capability.

The tunnels would be at least 30 feet deep, 12-24 feet in diameter and construction would take approximately 1-2 years if approved.
